Pre-Departure Planning

Trip Essentials

Visa & Entry
A $21 ESTA is required for Visa Waiver Program citizens, applied online at least 72 hours before departure. Travelers from non-waiver countries need a B1/B2 visitor visa, with processing that can run several weeks. File the application well in advance; demand spikes around the tournament.
Most nationalities can stay up to 180 days without a visa. You receive an FMM tourist permit at the border, or fill it out online before departure. Attending matches in both Mexico and the US? You'll need separate entry permits for each.
Travelers from visa-exempt countries need an eTA ($7 CAD, online application). A full visa, where required, should be filed for early. Processing is normally quick, though it can stretch during big events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
USD is the currency. Credit and debit cards are taken pretty much everywhere. Tipping culture is strong: 18-20% in restaurants, around $1-2 per drink at bars. Plan on $15-25 per meal at casual restaurants and $8-15 for fast food. In-venue food and drink prices are substantially higher.
Mexican Peso (MXN) is used. While USD is taken across tourist zones, paying in pesos lands a better exchange rate. 10-15% is the customary tip. A typical meal at local restaurants is $5-10 — Mexico is the most budget-friendly host. ATMs are widely available.
The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD). Card payments — contactless included — are universal. Tip 15-20% in restaurants. Meal pricing tracks the US, around $15-25 per plate. Pay attention — Canadian displayed prices are tax-exclusive, meaning your final bill runs 13-15% over what the menu shows.
Weather (June-July)
Climate varies sharply between host cities. The south is hot and humid: Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C. West Coast venues (LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C) are noticeably milder and drier. The East Coast runs warm and humid: New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C. For outdoor stadiums: sunscreen, a hat, and stay hydrated.
The wet season begins in June. Because Mexico City is at 2,200m, daytime tops out near 25°C and evenings cool down hard. Pack layered clothes and a rain shell. Both Guadalajara and Monterrey are warmer (30-33°C) and more humid. Brief afternoon thunderstorms are common.
The country's prime weather season. In Toronto, expect about 26°C with occasional humid spells. Vancouver's average is about 22°C, with up to 16 hours of daylight and minimal rain. Outdoor events feel comfortable in either city. Evening matches call for light layers.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Both Uber and Lyft work in all host cities. Free WiFi is broadly available at hotels, cafes, and airports. Grab an eSIM or prepaid SIM on arrival for mobile data. Public-transit quality differs widely — excellent in New York, limited in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B outlets, 127V (same as US). Spanish is spoken everywhere though plenty of English is spoken in tourist districts and near the venues. Both Uber and DiDi cover all three host cities. Grab a Telcel or AT&T Mexico SIM at the airport — affordable data and calls.
Plugs are Type A/B at 120V (matching US). English is spoken in Toronto, English/French in Vancouver. Uber is available in both cities. Reliable transit: Toronto's TTC and Vancouver's SkyTrain both connect to their respective stadiums. Canadian carriers are expensive; consider an eSIM or prepaid plan as a visitor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I apply for a US visa from Laos?

US Embassy Vientiane processes some visa categories but interview volume is limited. Many Lao passport holders apply at US Embassy Bangkok or US Consulate Chiang Mai, or at US Embassy Hanoi, where appointment slots are more frequent. Confirm with the embassy whether applying in a third country is permitted for your specific circumstances — in most cases it is, but evidence of ties to Laos (employment, property, family) must still be strong. Interview wait times in Bangkok have historically been shorter than in many markets.

What's the cheapest routing from Vientiane to the USA?

VTE-BKK on Lao Airlines or Thai Smile (1 hour 15 minutes), then BKK-ICN on Asiana or Korean Air, then ICN-LAX/SFO/JFK on the same carrier, is typically the cheapest clean itinerary. EVA Air via TPE is another strong value option for West Coast matches. Vietnam Airlines via HAN or SGN is often competitive. For maximum flexibility, fly VTE-BKK as a separate ticket on Lao Airlines (cheap, short) and buy the transpacific leg BKK-USA as a second ticket — this can save significantly versus a through-fare, but leaves you responsible if a delay misses your international connection.

Do I need visas for Canada and Mexico?

Yes for Canada: Lao passport holders need a visitor visa (TRV). Apply through IRCC online; processing from Laos typically runs 3 to 5 months as the application is reviewed remotely (biometrics may need to be given in Bangkok). For Mexico: if you hold a valid US visa, you can enter Mexico visa-free. Without a US visa, apply at the Mexican Embassy — the closest being in Bangkok or Hanoi since Laos does not host a Mexican mission. Plan the visa chain early; the US visa is the single biggest unlock for the whole tournament.

Should I stay overnight in Bangkok or Seoul on the way?

Strongly recommended for long itineraries. A Bangkok overnight en route lets you clear the VTE-BKK leg during the day, sleep in a BKK airport hotel (Novotel Suvarnabhumi is landside, several other options airside), and catch a morning or afternoon transpacific flight refreshed. A Seoul overnight on the return is even better — ICN has excellent airport hotels and the city is easily visited on a 24-hour stopover. Korean Air and Asiana offer free short stopover programmes for connecting passengers. The cost of a planned overnight is typically lower than the productivity loss of a no-sleep double-redeye.

What's the best US gateway from Laos?

Los Angeles is typically the cheapest from VTE on any routing, and has a small but active Lao-American community in Long Beach, San Diego and Fresno. San Francisco is a close second, with Lao communities in Richmond and Sacramento. Minneapolis (MSP) and Nashville (BNA) have surprisingly large Lao populations (Minnesota has the largest Lao-American community in the US) — fares to MSP can be reached via most Asian hubs with onward Delta service, and could be attractive if your group-stage matches align. For East Coast matches, JFK with Korean Air or ANA is cleanest.

How do I handle the Thai baht transit portion?

If you're overnighting in Bangkok, Thai baht cash is handy — Lao kip doesn't exchange outside Laos. Use a Thai ATM in Suvarnabhumi airport (fees are low for most international cards) for an overnight worth of cash. For longer stops (2+ days of tourism), a multi-currency card in USD plus a small Thai baht cash reserve is the classic combination. In the US, credit cards are accepted everywhere and contactless works well; the same card works in Mexico and Canada. Exchange Lao kip to USD before leaving Vientiane rather than at foreign airports — rates in Laos are reasonable.

Is travel insurance realistic for Lao fans?

Essential. Medical costs in the US exceed anything you would encounter in Laos — a single emergency room visit in the US can cost USD 5,000 to USD 20,000, and serious hospital care runs into hundreds of thousands. Buy an international policy with at least USD 200,000 medical cover and explicit United States inclusion. Several regional insurers (AIG Laos, Allianz, Chubb) sell international plans in LAK or USD; local banks also sometimes arrange group travel plans. Confirm the stopover city (Thailand, Korea, Japan or Vietnam) is covered and that 24-hour emergency support is available in Lao or English.
